BRATISLAVA, May 18 (Xinhua) -- Germany lost their first match at the ice hockey world championship on Saturday, trashed 8-1 by Canada and forced to surrender their second spot in Group A.

Both teams, however, ultimately clinched a playoff spot.

Trailing 3-0, Germany tried to make a comeback in the second period, but Yasin Ehli'z powerplay goal remained unanswered by his teammates.

Canada later completed the destruction of their opponents with five more goals to overtake the group's second place from Germany.

Mark Stone claimed a hat trick and Dylan Strome assisted three to lead Canada. Anthony Mantha also had a great night with two of his shots ending in Germany's net.

Germany will meet the United States on Sunday, as the Americans still have to fight for a quarterfinal spot. Canada will face off against Denmark on Monday.
