WASHINGTON, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Lionel Messi suffered an injury as Inter Miami edged to a 5-4 penalty shootout victory over Necaxa in the Leagues Cup on Saturday.

The 38-year-old Argentine forward limped off after just 10 minutes at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale with what appeared to be a right leg problem.

"He felt discomfort and we will not be able to know until tomorrow how severe the injury is," Inter Miami manager Javier Mascherano told reporters after the match. "He did feel a pull so we'll have to wait and see."

Telasco Segovia gave the MLS side the lead just after Messi's departure, but the hosts suffered a blow five minutes later when Maximiliano Falcon was shown a straight red card for a bad challenge on Diber Cambindo.

Necaxa equalized through Tomas Badaloni, but the Mexican side was also reduced to 10 men on the hour after Cristian Calderon was shown a second yellow card for a tackle on Luis Suarez.

Ricardo Monreal put Necaxa ahead with an 81st-minute strike before Jordi Alba's stoppage-time finish forced the game to penalties.

Suarez converted the decisive spot-kick in the shootout after Badaloni missed on his team's third attempt.

Inter Miami will host Pumas UNAM in its final group match on Wednesday, while Necaxa will visit Orlando City the same day.
